Thomas E. "Tom" Hartlen - It is with heavy hearts that the family of Tom Hartlen announces his peaceful passing, surrounded by family, on September 5, 2015 at the age of 73. Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Judy (Kennedy); his loving children, Stephen (Holly), John (Joanna) and Shelley (Nathan) MacDonald and his five cherished grandchildren, Noah, Claire, Owen, Morgan and Emily. Tom is also survived by his brothers, Allan (Carol Ann) of Kentville, Ian (Karen) of Halifax and Paul (Norah Jean) of Tabusintac, NB, as well as his sister-in-law, Cynthia (Bruce) Davies of Halifax. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Marion (Ryan) and his brother, Gerald. Tom was a committed family man - a loving husband, a protective and supporting father, a proud brother and an amazing grandfather. Tom absolutely adored his grandchildren, was thoroughly delighted by them and never tired of their company or speaking of them. Tom enjoyed a successful career with his other family at Maritime Paper Products in Dartmouth, where he retired in 2006 with 49 years of service. Tom’s spirit will live on in our hearts and memories. He will be forever remembered for his hearty laugh, loyalty, mentorship, wisdom and wit. He was a great man and touched the lives of so many; he will be sorely missed. We are grateful that he is now at peace. The family would like to thank the wonderful team on Medical Extension B at the Valley Regional Hospital who welcomed Tom and provided exceptional care with compassion and dignity, as well as his caring and dedicated doctor, Dr. David Nunn. We invite you to join the family in celebrating Tom’s life at the White Family Funeral Home in Kentville, NS on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., reception to follow. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015 from 6-9pm. A private family interment will follow the reception.  Family flowers only.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation – Medical Extension B.
