Evron Norinne Kinsman

1919-2015

Evron Norinne Kinsman

Evron Norinne Kinsman, Prof. Emerita, Music - of Kingsport, Kings County, died December 13, 2015 at Windsor Elms Village. She was the daughter of the late Reginald and Mildred (West) Kinsman. Born at home in North Medford on June 16, 1919. Named after her uncle, Everind, who died of the Spanish Flu in 1919. Throughout her life, she treasured early memories of large family gatherings, travelling on the Blueberry Special to KCA in Kentville, moonlight boat rides on the Minas Basin and winter sleigh rides with her uncle, Fred. With a music degree from Mt. Allison University '41, she began her 42 year teaching career at Bishop Spencer Anglican School, St. John's, Newfoundland. This was a memorable adventure at the height of WWII. Her travel to and from the mainland was by plane (T.C.A.) because of concern following the sinking of the ferry, S.S. Caribou, by a German U-Boat with the loss of many lives. In 1945, she returned to Mt. Allison University, joining the Music Faculty (piano). Further studies were at Julliard, piano performance with Kathleen Long in London, England and Columbia University (M.A.). Evron enjoyed her students and was proud of their successes. She guided many student trios on concert tours, travelling throughout the Atlantic Provinces. She once said, "We often played for people who had never heard a concert." She also frequently adjudicated at Music Festivals throughout the Maritimes. At retirement, Evron was awarded the Herbert and Leota Tucker Memorial Prize for excellence in teaching. She returned to her beloved Annapolis Valley where she enjoyed many friendships, community activities, volunteering, attending concerts and CFUW meetings in Wolfville and swimming in the Minas Basin. Evron was a gracious lady who enjoyed laughter and a good game of Scrabble! As a member of Emmanuel United Church, she enjoyed being their organist for many years. Evron was easily recognized driving her "dark green Volvo Turbo" around the community. She also enjoyed travel, with trips to Bermuda and various European Countries. Her last major trip was to Russia in 2001. A great way to finish! Our families are saddened to lose Evron while at the same time, we celebrate the very special relationship we all enjoyed with her. She will be missed by her nieces and nephews, Shirlean Lewis, Rosalie (Ken) Moreash, Brenda (Phil) Clements, Reg (Deanie) Johnson, Eric (Mil) Johnson, Jane (Ken) MacDonald/Hoffman and families. She was predeceased by her loving sisters, Elizabeth (Robert) Johnson and Alice (Bill) MacDonald. Special thanks to Dr. Joseph and Dr. Hergett, VON caregivers, Windsor Elms Village staff for their exceptional and caring support. Also deep appreciation to Helen, Jeanne and Lawrence, Linda and Leonard, Barb and Wayne and the Kingsport/Medford communities. Cremation has taken place. A service of remembrance and a reception will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Emmanuel United Church, Kingsport, followed by interment in Habitant Cemetery.
