John William Ross

1922-2016

John William Ross

John William Ross, MBA, CMA, FCMA - From The Points, West Bay, Nova Scotia, died February 1, 2016 in Kentville, Nova Scotia (his residence of the last 2 years) at the age of 93 years. Born in The Points, West Bay in 1922 to Helen (Gallivan) and Robert Ross. Known as 'Jack' while growing up, he was the last surviving member of his 7 siblings (Eileen, Bobby, Donald, Elsie, Jane, and George. A sister died in infancy). John attained his Commerce degree from Dalhousie University. Later, with the support from Ruth, he was able to receive an MBA from McMaster at night school while working during the day and with small children at home (I think Mom deserves the credit here!). He enjoyed skiing with the family nearly every weekend. We had ski vacations as a family and summer vacations that often took us to Cape Breton where outdoor pursuits were enjoyed as well as many games of cards – mostly by the kids. He was an avid woodworker and made pieces for his family. He was a great gardener and we always had an overabundance of fruits and vegetables. His flower gardens were a beautiful sight. He was an excellent cook and generally no recipe was necessary. Most of his adult life, and until retirement, he was employed with the Society of Management Accountants of Canada (now Certified Management Accountants of Canada) where he finished his career as Executive Vice President of the national society. His work took him around the world and he was well respected in his field. He and Ruth were able to enjoy travel to many countries and enjoyed a good game of bridge. He retired to Cape Breton in the early 1980s where he enjoyed many pursuits including working in the woods, gardening (on a much bigger scale!), making maple syrup and apple cider, hunting and ice fishing. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth (Rupert) who was a lovely caring mother and wife who is missed. He and Ruth raised 6 children: Nancy (Jack), Martha (Alan), Colleen, Peter, Barbara (Mike) and Michael (Mizuho). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Leila, Amanda, Jason, Jessica, Melanie, Isaac, Helen, Thomas and Jim; two great-grand children, Emery and Otis; and other embraced family members: Bassem Eid, John Weatherhead, and Leanne Bennett. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank the staff and owners of Wedgewood House for Seniors in Kentville for their loving and supportive care. As well, thanks to all the residents of Wedgewood House for their kindness and friendship. Thanks also to those members of his Cape Breton community who positively supported him over the years.
