Gordon Patrick Gavin

1943-2016

Gordon Patrick Gavin

Gordon Patrick Gavin - of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, died unexpectedly on April 1, 2016 at Valley Regional Hospital at the age of 72. The eldest child of the late William F. Gavin and Grace V. Haley, Gordie was born and educated in Halifax and also where he began his career at the Royal Insurance Company of Canada. He moved to the Annapolis Valley in 1972. At the time of his death, Gordie was Vice President at MacDonald Chisholm Trask Insurance where he had worked happily for 43 years. Gordie was passionate about his community and volunteered his time to many Kentville sports teams and tournaments including being part of the 1983 National Slo-Pitch Championship and the 1985 National Senior Baseball Championship organizing committee held in Kentville. For several years he also chaired the annual Easter Invitational Pee Wee Minor Hockey Tournament. He was very proud of managing the Kentville Pee Wee Wildcats and taking them to the Quebec International Pee Wee Hockey Tournament for 15 years and of his time as manager of the Kentville Wildcats in 1977 that represented Team Nova Scotia at the National Midget Championship, at that time called, The Wrigley Cup. Gordie also co-founded the Oland Softball Jamboree/Slo-Pitch Tournament that ran successfully for 25 years.  Gordie was a member of the Kentville Labatt Slo-Pitch team that was inducted in to the Softball Nova Scotia Hall of Fame winning 10 Provincial Master Championships. Gordie was one of the founding members of the Kings Amateur Sports Society bringing in top sports celebrities such as his idol Gordie Howe, Walter Gretzky and Don Cherry to name a few. Gordie was also on the board of The Kings County Commercial Travellers Association.  He was a devoted sports fan, most especially of the Detroit Red Wings and the Boston Red Sox. His love for life was heightened in the summer when he was close to the ocean with regular vacations in Bayfield, NS and Shediac, NB, enjoying good company, sunsets, cold beverages and lobster, second only to his delight in his grandsons, Jack and Blake. Gordie is survived by his beloved partner, Susan Grant, of Wolfville; son, Mark (Shannon Duffy) of Bedford; two grandsons, Jack Gavin, Bedford, and Blake Killen, Wolfville; siblings, Lynne Reed of North Carolina; Thomas Gavin, Judith Gavin, Susan Gavin and Patricia Gavin, all of Halifax; and first wife, Barbara, of Kentville. Cremation has occurred. A Celebration of his life will be held at the Old Orchard Inn on Sunday April 10, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. Donations in Gordie's memory may be made to Kidsport or the Arthritis Society - Nova Scotia divisions.
