Melvin Gideon Pilgrim
1937-2016
Melvin Gideon Pilgrim - age 78, of Cambridge, Kings County, Nova Scotia passed away on April 8, 2016 at the QEII in Halifax. Melvin had a stroke on April 4, 2014 and since then his health steadily deteriorated, resulting in his death. Melvin was born in St. Anthony Bight, NL in 1937. When he was a young man he moved with his family to St. Anthony. Melvin met and married Gertrude Compton in 1958 and together they raised five children: two girls and three boys. In August of 2008 Melvin, along with his wife, Gertie moved to Cambridge, NS to be closer to family. Melvin was a member of The Salvation Army all of his life. He enjoyed the vibrant worship that was part of The Salvation Army church services. He also enjoyed the opportunities for leadership that The Salvation Army provided him. Melvin committed his life to the Lord when he was just a young boy. He had a very strong faith in God and faithfully served Him all his life. Melvin was never bashful in sharing his faith with the people around him and no one was ever left in doubt as to his strong relationship with the Lord. Melvin leaves to mourn his wife of 58 years, Gertie; his five children, Bernice Fox (Richard) of Toronto, ON; Velma Preston (Bill) of Midland, ON; Dale (Glenys) of Winnipeg, MB; Kevin (Pamela) of Kingston, NS; and Glen of Hamilton, ON. He also leaves to mourn brother, Major Warrick Pilgrim (Lucy) of London ON; sisters, Nina Tucker (Levi) of Quirpon, NL; Winnie Brenton (Wayne) of Pasadena, NL; and Edna Kinsella (Harold) of White Way, NL; along with 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service and reception will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at The Salvation Army Church, 15 Nicholas Avenue, Kentville, NS. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
