Well Known Kentville Businessman Passes Away

 

R. Douglas "Doug" Macdonald – 76, of Kentville, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville on June 14, 1940, he was the son of the late Ralph L. and Evelyn "Eileen" (Burbidge) Macdonald. He graduated from Kings County Academy, attended Acadia University and entered the family business in 1960. Doug held many business positions, currently including President, R. L. Macdonald Investments Ltd., a real estate and investment holding company and President, 2376552 Nova Scotia Limited, a real estate holding company. Previous business positions included President and Chief Executive Officer, Macdonald Chisholm Inc.; President and Chief Executive Officer, Macdonald Chisholm Holdings Ltd.; President, Nunak Holdings Limited (McDougall Heights), a residential land development company; Secretary, Coldbrook Developments Limited, a commercial land development company; Director, Equisure Trust Company (formerly Evangeline Trust Company); and Director, Equisure Financial Network Inc., an insurance and financial services company. A dedicated supporter of his community, Doug generously volunteered his time and talents with many organizations and trade associations, including Director, Insurance Brokers’ Association of Nova Scotia (1965-67); Commissioner, Kentville Board of Police Commissioners (1978-79);  President, Kentville Business Improvement Corporation Limited (1980-82); President, Annapolis Valley Real Estate Board (1980-82); President, Kentville Board of Trade (1979-80); President, Annapolis Valley Affiliated Boards of Trade (1981-82); and President, Nova Scotia Real Estate Association (1986). He also served as Vice President, Valley Health Services Association (Valley Regional Hospital) (1987-89); President and General Campaign Chairman, Valley Regional Hospital Foundation (successfully concluded $8 million fund raising campaign towards construction of new hospital) (1985-89); Director, Apple Tree Foundation (Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre) (1994-95); Director & Chair, Finance & Audit Committee, Annapolis Valley District Health Authority (2001-03); Chair, Board of Directors, Landmark East Association (2003-06); and Trustee, Board of Trustees, Landmark East Foundation (2006-09). Doug was also currently an Honorary Director, Valley Regional Hospital Foundation as well as a Member, Pacesetting Committee, Our Community, Our Health $8 million Valley Revitalization Campaign. A dedicated Rotarian for 46 years, Doug served as President of the Rotary Club of Kentville (1976-77), was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow, and served as Co-Chair, Town Clock Sub-Committee; Past Chair, Community Service Committee; and Past Chair, Youth Committee. A member of the former United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen, he served as Chairman, Fund Raising Committee (1995); Member, Board of Management (1998); and Treasurer, Board of Trustees (2006-08). He was also a Director, Glooscap Curling Club of Kentville Limited (1967); and a former member of both the Glooscap Curling Club and the Ken-Wo Golf & Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Fay (Murray); a daughter, Susan Kingsbury, Kentville; a son, Bruce (Donna), Halifax; four grandchildren, Beth, Andrew, Emily and Gracie. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation, Landmark East School Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
