Mary "Olive" Smith

Mary "Olive" Smith – 99, of New Minas, Kings County, passed away peacefully at Valley Regional Hospital with family at her side, on Wednesday, July 20, 2016. Olive always said, "I do not want any tears when I’m gone. I have had a great life". Olive loved her family. She filled her time knitting many treasured afghans and dish cloths, which she was knitting up until a few days before her passing. Olive enjoyed family and friends coming to visit and would always be happy to have a glass of "cheer" and a laugh. Olive was predeceased by her husband, James "Ron" and daughter, Charlene; sisters, Dora and Theresa; brothers, Emery, Ernest, Eugene, Raul and Blair. She is survived by daughters, Margo (Jim) King and Ronna (Roger) Jones; eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Lavina and Andrea; brother, Vincent (Marie). The family wish to thank Dr. Jennifer Muggah for her excellent care and home visits. A special thank you to the VON Home Support team for making it possible for Olive to stay in her own home. Thanks to Olives caregivers Denisa and Lisa, with a special appreciation to Louise Best for her care, kindness and compassion. The family would also like to thank special friend, Mary Sponagle, Olive looked so forward to your visits.  Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by request. The funeral service and reception will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2016 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville, Father Gerald Saulnier officiating. Burial will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2016 in the Palmerston Cemetery, Pugwash. A reception will follow the burial in St. Thomas More Hall, Pugwash.  Donations in memory of Olive may be given to VON Home Care Support; Valley Regional Palliative Care or a charity of your choice.
