John Rickey Barton

The family of the late John Rickey Barton - 64 of Parkdale, Nova Scotia, are heartbroken to announce his sudden passing at home on Friday, September 9, 2016. Born in Wolfville, he was the only son of Evangeline (Bennett) Barton, Pereaux and the late Garnet Barton and was the last remaining male in the Barton line. Rick is survived by his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Jeannie; daughter, Charla Barton Selfridge (Dave), grandson, Kyle, granddaughters, Emily and Avary; their dad, Robert Selfridge, Kentville; his mother, Evangeline (Jim), Pereaux; sisters, Paula Laroque (Denis), PEI;  Marlene Cookson (Carman), Lower La Have; Jane Grist, New Minas; Veronica Enslow (Ellison), Steam Mill and Janice Barton (Dale), New Minas; his mother and father in law, James and Marion Pineo, Hillaton; sisters by heart, Lorenda Veinot (Donnie), Kentville; Mary Apt Pineo (Rod), Alberta; Michelle Stark (Graham), PEI; brother in law, Jim Lyons, Kingsport; his nieces and nephews, Michelle, Keith, Jessica, Katelyn, Matthew, Ryan, Jamie, Donald, Amanda, David, Shawn, Chad , Jeremy, Logan and Colin who all loved their uncle Rick. He was predeceased by his father, Garnet; sister, Bonnie Johnson; sister in law, Darlene Pineo Lyons. Rick grew up in Pereaux, graduated from Kingstec with a Heavy Duty Mechanics course and married his sweetheart on September 25, 1971. He got his start with his Uncle Lawrence Bennett in Canning at his service station and then with Paul C. Palmer Ford Tractor Ltd. in Berwick to complete his apprenticeship. Rick was a drummer with 'The Band Of Gold' (many stories to be fondly remembered there) until the of fall of 1978. He and his family moved to Alberta in 1978 where he was employed with Imperial Oil until 1985, when they were offered a transfer to Cairo Egypt to train his many friends there in his field, a contract that was originally signed for five years and he stayed for 10. He transferred back to Calgary to work on a Capacity Assurance Team for two years with Esso. After moving back to NS for a further two years,  he and Jeannie went back to Maadi, Cairo and Zeit Bay on the Red Sea for over 20 years where he was Maintenance and Field Manager. "Mr Rick" was highly respected by all his guys at work. He underwent open heart surgery in January, 2013 after being air lifted to London England and retired shortly after, to set up his wood working shop to keep himself busy. Rick adored and was so proud of his daughter, Charla; granddaughters, Emily and Avary ("his girls") and his grandson, Kyle. He often said, "Gawd I Love those kids!" He was a generous loving husband, father, son, brother, grampy, an uncle and friend to many. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service and reception will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2016. Interment will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. In lieu of flowers donations are greatly appreciated to The Terry Fox Foundation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Mental Health Association of Nova Scotia.
