Joanne Elizabeth Simpson

1968-2016

Joanne Elizabeth Simpson

SIMPSON, Joanne Elizabeth BA, BSc., RN - Surrounded by her loving family, Joanne Elizabeth Simpson passed away on September 12, 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary due to complications that arose following a very brief and sudden illness. Joanne was born in Halifax on December 12, 1968, and grew up in Dartmouth. She was an honours graduate of Dartmouth High School. At age 17, Joanne joined the military reserves and was active in both the Halifax Militia and the Land Forces Atlantic Area bands, eventually obtaining the rank of sergeant following specialized training at Camp Aldershot and CFB Borden. She played an active role for many years with the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, a popular military extravaganza. Proudly putting herself through school, Joanne obtained both a BA music degree and a BSc. degree from Dalhousie University. She went on to obtain her RN's from the Aberdeen School of Nursing in New Glasgow. Joanne spent several years in the States working as a medical/surgical nurse; first in Florida and later in North Carolina where, in 1999, her son Justin was born. Upon her return to Nova Scotia, Joanne worked in both the Emergency department and ICU at the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville and held supervisory positions before accepting employment as the Manager of the Wolfville Nursing Home. At the time of her passing, Joanne was the Home's Director of Nursing. An accomplished pianist and flutist, Joanne could also play the saxophone and loved classical music. Joanne was a devoted mother, sister, daughter, and friend. She was the best listener. Generous to a fault, she was also kind, compassionate, empathetic, and had a sense of humour. She touched the lives of so many and made us smile. Justin was the light of her life. Joanne...you left us too soon and too suddenly. We miss you so much already and words can't begin to describe the loss we feel....the void in our hearts. In addition to her teenaged son Justin, she is survived by her parents Joan and Bill Simpson of New Minas; her sister Katherine of Halifax, her brother Stephen (Caitlynn) and their two girls Emily and Chloe of Dartmouth and several loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Cremation has taken place. At the family's request, there will be no visitation. Joanne's memorial service and reception will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2016 in Orchard Valley United Church, New Minas, Reverend Ivan Norton officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Toney River, Pictou County. In Lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Justin Simpson Trust Fund (accepted at the White Family Funeral Home) or to the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
