J. H. Emerson Thorpe - 82, of Pereaux, Kings County, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2016 in Grand View Manor, Berwick. He was born on June 27, 1934 to the late Henry and Modena (Butler) Thorpe, Scots Bay Road, Kings County. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Harriett (Greene); two sisters, Ora (Bruce) Maxwell, Montgomery, Alabama; Hazel (Arthur) Caldwell, Arlington, Kings County; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marion and Murray Power, New Minas; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Merville and a sister, Edith. Emerson graduated from Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 1955. He went on to work for 37 years in vegetable research at the Agriculture Canada Research Station, Kentville. He was an active member of Pereaux Baptist Church, where he served on many boards, committees and volunteered with the working group at Cherry Hall. He was a 4-H member in his youth and attended the 1950 Royal Winter Fair in Toronto for the potato judging team representing Nova Scotia. He then went on to be a 4-H leader and Sigma-Hi leader in a youth group. He was a gifted public speaker and debater and was considered one of the best debaters at the NSAC, representing his class in interclass debating. He had a musical gift in voice as well as playing the guitar. He was a member of the choir at Pereaux Baptist Church, a male choir, singing solos at weddings and funerals as well as singing in quartets and trios. He was active for a number of years in plot planning and maintaining the upkeep of the Pereaux Cemetery. He was a director and secretary of Oak and Elm Grove Cemetery for a period of time. He enjoyed sports and loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be missed in our midst. We wish to thank the ones who cared for Emerson during his time of need; the Valley Regional Hospital, Mountain Lea Lodge, and Grand View Manor. Also, thanks to family members, friends and neighbors for your help, love and concern. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday, October 9, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2016, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to the Pereaux Baptist Church, the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation, the Alzheimer Society or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
