Edrie "Jean" (Dobson) Mosher

1932-2016

Edrie "Jean" (Dobson) Mosher

Peacefully, in Wolfville, Edrie "Jean" Mosher left this world on November 9, 2016 with a book in her hand, comfortable at home. Jean was the baby of her family of 12, born on July 6, 1932 in Half Island Cove, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. Jean was a very accomplished woman in her 84 years of life. Starting in her one-room school house in Guysborough County, she achieved the highest aggregate and average in all grades. Jean finished high school in Wolfville then proceeded to the VGH for Nursing School (1954), Diploma in Nursing Service Administration from Dalhousie University (1962), followed by BSc in Nursing, Cum Laude, from Mount St. Vincent University (1969). She also achieved Certified Health Executive Designation from the Canadian College of Health Services and Executives. Jean had a brief work stint in Bermuda before landing in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. In 1959 she started her long illustrious dedicated careers at the BFM Hospital, the NS Sanatorium, where she was a head nurse then became Director of Nursing and Assistant Executive Director of Patient Services. She finished out her years of health care service with the Valley Health Services Association in Kentville. Jean held various professional organization appointments: President, Registered Nurses Valley Branch; Chairman, Nursing Service Committee Valley and Provincial; and Vice President, R.N.A.N.S. Jean was also on the Board of Registration of Nursing Assistants and served as the Minister of Health's representative for 13 years; Canadian Lung Association Nurses Section Chairman; Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing Advisory Committee; Surveyor for the Canadian Council on Health Facilities Accreditation; Chairman of the Provincial Task Force on Nursing Workload Measurement; Senior Nurses Administrator of Nova Scotia, President and Treasurer; member of several Nova Scotia Association of Health Organizations; and member of VG Nurses Alumnae and Nova Scotia Government Retired Employees Association. Jean devoted her life to her work but found a late love in life at 64 and married Peter Mosher in Kentville in 1996. Jean had many interests in life and her retirement years. She lovingly took care of her ailing sister when she was sick. Jean loved animals but in particular all her cats that she had over the years. She was also a voracious reader, loved listening to music, bowling, gardening, coin collecting, swatting pesky houseflies in her home and baking delicious cookies for her step grandsons when they came to visit. Jean always had a joke for them or a funny noise to make them smile. Jean was quick witted and enjoyed company. Jean was predeceased by her parents, William and Bessie (Armsworthy) Dobson; sisters, May Wilson, Mildred Fogarty, Blanche Jamieson, Helen Davis, Lexie Cameron and Thelma Davidson; brothers, Roy Dobson, Basil Dobson, Borden Dobson and Donald Dobson. Jean leaves behind her family, who will miss her, husband of 20 years, Peter Mosher, Wolfville; step daughter, Susan (Mosher) Buckley and husband, Rick, San Antonio, Texas; step son, James Mosher, (Dartmouth); brother, Bill Dobson and wife, Mayola, Dartmouth; four step grandsons, Justin, Luc, Nick, and Seth; also several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. She will also be missed by her ragdoll cat, Chloe. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request.
