Kenneth Hird

1934-2016

Kenneth Hird

It is with great sadness that the family of Ken Hird, age 82, of Kentville, announces his peaceful but unexpected passing in Valley Regional Hospital on November 19, 2016. Ken was born in Garland, Nova Scotia, the son of the late Lester and Ellen (Cahill) Hird. After leaving the farm and training as an automobile mechanic, Ken married the love of his life, Kathryn "Kay". Ken spent his 42 year career working at Milne's Garage in New Minas. He began as a mechanic and progressed quickly to the position of Service Manager where his integrity was valued by his many customers. Ken was a charter member of the Kinsmen Club of Kentville and remained an active member of the Kentville K-40 club. He was also an active member of the Kentville Baptist Church for over 60 years where he had been very involved in the church's stewardship committee which cares for the church buildings and property. Ken was a true handyman and could excel at anything that he turned his hand to. He enjoyed building and maintaining the family cottage as well as planning and finishing a number of home additions over the years as his family grew. He found great peace and enjoyment working in the woods cutting and preparing firewood to heat his home. In his retirement, Ken enjoyed working with small engines and was often the "go-to" guy to his many friends and acquaintances when they had problems with their yard equipment. Ken is survived by his daughter, Susan; son, Rob (Tracy); granddaughter, Lauren; sisters, Alice (Malcolm) Ogilvie, Burlington; Flora (Ed) Thurston, Sandford; Betty (Richard) Doucet, Lyons Brook; Norma (John) Sturk, North Alton; Nancy Sanford, North Alton; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Lester and Ellen; infant brother, Arthur; brother-in-law, Budd Sanford; infant son, Andrew; and his beloved wife, Kay. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 24, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A celebration of Ken's life, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 26, 2016 in the Kentville Baptist Church, Reverend Doctor David Bielby officiating. Burial will take place in the Berwick Cemetery. Donations in Ken's memory may be made to the Kentville Baptist Church for church building maintenance, Valley Regional Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
