Rose "Mary" Barr

1937-2017

Rose "Mary" Barr

A life well lived ended on April 27, 2017, when our beloved mother and friend passed away at the age of 79. Mary was born in Merigomish, Pictou County to the late John and Jean MacDonald and spent her early years enjoying rural life.  Mary started her nursing career in the early 1970s after graduating from the V.G. School of Nursing. In 1971 she embarked upon her true calling: motherhood.  Tragically, her husband, Colin Barr, died in a car accident in 1974 leaving her with 3 young daughters. She devoted her life to raising her "girls", which she did with strength, humour and unconditional love.  In 1985, they moved from Merigomish to the Annapolis Valley, where Mary re-entered the nursing profession, working at the Kings Rehabilitation Center until her retirement.  Mary’s faith was extremely important to her and she was proud to be a founding and very involved member of the Kings Presbyterian Church in New Minas. Mary was blessed to find love again later in her life spending her retirement years enjoying the beauty of Hall’s Harbour with Cliff O’Handley.  A special thank you to the support staff at Windsor Elms for their care the last few months. Mary is survived by her brother, Fraser MacDonald (Iza) and niece Carla; daughters: Lisa Sanford (Pat), Jennifer Gaetz (Shawn), Kim MacEwan (Chris Abbott), Coline (Robert Crouse); her "adopted" son, Dwayne Cameron (Sonia); grandchildren, Scott, Jeffrey, Logan, Riley, Grace, Aidan Drew, Olivia, Dylan and Isaac and her special friend Cliff O’Handley. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her nephew John B. MacDonald. Cremation has taken place under the care of White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Visitation will be held Monday, May 1st from 6-8 at the home of Coline & Robert. Please contact Coline at [email protected] for details. Funeral service will be held at Kings Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, May 2 at 11 a.m. Donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or Kings Presbyterian Church.  Condolences may be shared with the family at:  www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
