1922-2017

J. Grace Cowie Wills J. Grace Cowie Wills

Jessie Grace Cowie Wills - 94 The family of the late Jessie Grace Cowie Wills announce her passing on the 25th of May 2017 in Greenwich, NS. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late David and Jean (Wood) Cowie. Grace was predeceased by her husband, William Allen Wills and her younger brother, James Cowie. Surviving are son, David (Dianne), Wolfville, NS; daughters, Janice, Wolfville, NS and Jocelyn (Gerrard), Hantsport; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In her early years, Grace lived for a short time in Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka), where her father was a train engineer on the tea trains running between Kandy and Colombo. Following a tragic train accident, where her father was killed, Grace, along with her mother and brother, returned to Edinburgh and eventually immigrated to Canada (Winnipeg). Grace was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the RCAF (WD), with postings at Winnipeg, Trenton and Rockcliffe. The highlight of her stint in the Air Force was a two week trip in 1943 to New York City. Many stories were told about that trip, with visits to two Broadway plays, Times Square, the view from atop the Empire State building etc. One of the special parts for her was never having to pay for lunch because she was wearing her Royal Canadian Air Force uniform and the New Yorkers, as a way of saying thank you for her contribution to the war effort, would refuse to let her pay, a memorable experience for someone of Scottish origin. Grace was a member of Saint James Anglican Church, Kentville and was actively involved in the Ladies Auxillary. Before retirement, Grace was employed with the Municipality of the County of Kings. There will be no funeral or visitation by request. A private family service will be held at Saint James Anglican Church, Kentville at a later date. The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to all the staff at Blomidon Court, Greenwich, where Grace spent her final years comfortably in their care. In lieu of flowers, donations may kindly be made to the S.M.I.L.E. Program at Acadia University. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line condolences and inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
