Alton Lee Allen

Alton Lee Allen - 85, of Wolfville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday, June 25, 2017 in the Windsor Elms Village, Falmouth. Born in Melanson, Kings County, he was a son of the late Clayton and Evelyn (Cavanaugh) Allen. His first job was working on the family farm, where he developed a love and passion for horses and remained active on the farm long after his retirement. He had been employed on the pulp boats with Minas Stevedore from 1946-1961. He later drove a school bus for the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board from 1961-1971 and during the summer months, worked as a janitor with Horton District High School and drove a dump truck. He was most recently employed with Minas Basin Pulp and Power from 1971-1996, from where he retired. He was a member of the Silver and Gold Club, where he took part in Senior Games, the Royal Canadian Legion, Dr. C. B. Lumsden Branch No. 74, Wolfville, the Glooscap Campers, the Wolfville and District Lions Club, the Wolfville Ridge Baptist Church, organized the Greenwich Jam Sessions, was a member of the Valley Harmonica Band, volunteered at various community events and functions and had a love for music, which took him on many travels. He also enjoyed horseshoes, darts and tug-of-war. He is survived by two sons, Ryan (Lynne), Melanson; Gary (Morgan Parsons), Falmouth; three daughters, Alma (Stephen) Porter, Hants Border; Fern (Gordon) Uhlman, Windermere; Stacey (Mike) Swinamer, Sylvan Lake, AB; four sisters, Audrey Dorey (Tony Stirling), Barbara Mitchell, Beverly Brown and Rosalind (Gil) Moreau; three brothers, Leslie, Budd and Paul; nine grandchildren, Kirt Porter, Jennifer Emberley, Brad Mahaney, Melissa Dauphinee, Colin Allen, Justin Allen, Kyler Devenne; Dylan Swinamer and Brooke Allen; seven great grandchildren, Emma Porter, Jemika Porter, Mason Porter, Austin Mahaney, Jayden Mahaney, Mia Dauphinee and Sarahlynn Allen. He was predeceased by his wife, Sheila (Beckwith); two sisters, Dorothy Corkum and Ena Rogers; five brothers, Joseph, Glen, Chesley, Charles and Stephen; and a great granddaughter, Sophi Porter. There will be a Lions service and a Royal Canadian Legion service beginning at 5:30 p.m. with visitation to be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 all in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2017, Reverend Gary Manthorne and Reverend Robert Burbidge officiating. Burial will take place in the Gaspereau Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Windsor Elms Bus Society or the Lung Association. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville, Nova Scotia.
