Kathryn "Cappy" Alma Charlton

Kathryn "Cappy" Alma Charlton - We are very sad to announce the death of Cappy Charlton on August 20th, 2017, at the age of 97. She died peacefully with her family at her side. Born on February 7th, 1920 she was the daughter of the late Kate (Rockwell) and John H. Clarke. She was one of nine children and grew up on the family farm in Grafton. In her early life she was active in sports, and was proud of the fact that her softball team, the Grafton Valley Queens, was the first girl’s team in Kings County, in 1937. Over the years, Cappy had a number of achievements, including opening her own ladies clothing store, volunteering at the Berwick Camp Meeting grounds, and being one of the founding members of the Berwick Gala Days. She was a lifelong member of the Berwick Baptist Church and a member of the women’s missionary group and a member of the church auxiliary. She was a charter member of Laurel Chapter, #67, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as Past Worthy Matron. She married John H. Charlton in 1941 and they celebrated 71 years of marriage. She graduated from Mack Business College and worked at Canada Foods, followed by 17 years at Zeller’s until her retirement. John & Cappy spent 19 winters at Saddlebag Lake in Lake Wales, Florida. Cappy became a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays while watching them at spring training in Florida, and she remained a Blue Jays fan throughout her life. Her interests included knitting, sewing, quilting, cooking (she was famous for her jam jam cookies), cards, cribbage and politics. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and received great joy from the visits of her great grandchildren Eira, Lucien and Fionn. Cappy spent the last several years at Fundy Villa in Berwick where she enjoyed many close friendships and her social activities, including daily games of crib and 45’s. She is survived by her daughter Linda (Mike) Moreash, grandchildren Matthew (Li), Rebecca (Steven Nelson) and great grandchildren Eira, Lucien and Fionn, and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by her son Brian Charlton (Celia) and family. She is also survived by her brother Gerald (Hilda) Clarke, Berwick and sister Jean Stacey, Delaware. She was predeceased by her husband John, brothers Alison, Joe, Frank, and Isaac, and sisters Ebbie and Toby. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation and funeral service will be held at Berwick Baptist Church on Sunday September 24th at 2pm. There will be an Eastern Star service prior to the church service.
