Frederick "Bunk" Kempton Ells

The family and friends of Frederick "Bunk" Kempton Ells are sad to announce his passing at Digby General Hospital on November 6, 2017, at the age of 95.  He lived most of his long life healthy and happy either beside, or on, the sea.   Born on April 3, 1922, in Baxter’s Harbour he was the son of the late Fred and Bessie (Irvin) Ells.  He served in the Royal Canadian Navy and was a proud World War II veteran. A man of free and determined spirit, Fred resided most of the past 50 years on what-was-once his fishing boat. That’s what he wanted, and that’s the way he liked it, and he did so until September of this year. He will be remembered by many friends and acquaintances in and around the safe and welcoming harbours of Digby, Hall’s Harbour, Scot’s Bay and Annapolis Royal – all places where he could call home for weeks or months at a time. Fred was the last surviving member of a family of 9 children.  He is survived by daughter, Sandy Jacobson (partner, Phil Buchanan), 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, all of New Jersey; numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and the U.S.; and the many wonderful friends who included store-owners, restaurateurs and a generally compassionate community who cared about his well-being. He was predeceased by siblings Leonard, Mary, Austin, Perry, Henry, Leona, Clarence, and Maisie. There will be no visitation by request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion service and funeral service with a reception will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 9, 2017 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. Burial will take place in the Baxter’s Harbour Cemetery. Donations to Baxter’s Harbour Community Hall. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
