Edward Donald "Don" Schaffner

Edward Donald "Don" Schaffner – Don passed away peacefully in his sleep, at Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville at the age of 88, after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.  Born in 1928 in Middleton, he was the only son of the late Karl and Lillian Schaffner.  In 1951, he married the love of his life, Roma Dunning from Prince Edward Island, and began a 64 year marriage.  Don worked extremely hard to support his family, with Roma guiding the kids and household – it was a great partnership.  A very skilled carpenter, he built many homes and rec rooms in the Middleton area, as well as beautiful furniture that his family is very fortunate to still have in their homes today.  Don also truly loved the "big band" music, and he played drums at various venues for over 25 years.  Don was predeceased by his two sisters, Hazel (Joe) Rolland of Ottawa and Doris (Frank) West of Middleton.  He is survived by his three children, Donna (Victor) Stanhope, Rodney and Barry (Louise); his six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  We would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff of Medical B at Valley Regional for the great care and attention to our father.  As per Don’s wishes, there will be no service. Interment of his ashes will take place at a later date.  If you wish to remember Don, donations may be made to Valley Regional Hospital or Canadian Cancer Society.
