William Joseph "Billy Joe" King

William Joseph "Billy Joe" King – 86, of Avonport, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Wolfville, he was the son of the late Percy and Olive (Parker) King. He is survived by daughters, Rebecca King, Halifax; Cindy (Sean) Williams, Melbourne, Australia and Christine King, Avonport; a son, Kevin, Avonport; sisters, Katherine Finck, Avonport and Penny King, Grand Pré; a granddaughter, Matilda, Melbourne, Australia. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances (Cruickshanks) and a sister, Mildred King. After graduating from Wolfville High School, he worked full time on the farm where he grew up and took over from his father in 1956. His main interest was in poultry, first in laying hens and then broilers for the ACA Co-operative in New Minas, where he sat on the Board of Directors. He sold the farm and retired in 1995. He joined the Wolfville Curling Club in the 1950’s, served as President and on various committees. In retirement he took up playing golf and was a member of Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage and bridge and spent time enjoying life. He was able to visit Australia to see Cindy and Sean and later enjoyed their visits home with granddaughter, Tilly. He was a long-time member of the Wolfville Lions Club and served on various committees including Meals on Wheels. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by request. The funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at The Little Red Schoolhouse in Melanson, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
