Phyllis Cora Young

1922-2018

Phyllis Cora Young

Phyllis Cora (Lenihan) Young – It is with much sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, age 95, on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville after a brief bout of pneumonia. Born in New Ross to Alvin and Alma (Hennigar) Lenihan on May 12, 1922, Phyllis was the middle child among seven siblings, and was the last surviving member of her family. Although an excellent student, she left school at an early age to work both in New Ross and in the Valley area. It was while she was working at the Evaporator in Port Williams that she met Gordon and they spent their 74 years of marriage on the family farm in White Rock where they worked side by side. Mum enjoyed gardening and as well as an abundance of flowers inside their home and outside too, there was always a supply of home canned goods to enjoy with fresh homemade bread and other treats. Mum was a creative and talented seamstress and crafter and made many beautiful quilts, afghans, wall hangings and clothes for the family and others. Mum was very musical and sang and played guitar. She and dad belonged to square and round dance groups and often hosted community square dances in their home during the winter months. They enjoyed travelling throughout Eastern Canada and the US. She loved her family dearly and her special joy was hosting gatherings for visiting family and friends. Children always brought a smile to her face. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; son, Bill; her parents; brothers, Roy and Clyde in infancy, Fred (Marion), Orrin (Doris) and Ivan, all of New Ross; sister, Frances (Jim) Collicutt, Canaan. She is survived by daughters, Joyce (Gary) Creaser, Timberlea; Jackie (Leslie) Sheffield, White Rock; grandchildren, Joel (Kim) Sheffield; Jordan; Nicholas (Erin) Creaser; Matthew (Stephanie) Creaser; and Jennilee Creaser; great-grandchildren, Colin, Evan, Ailey, Dylan, Noah, Levi, Oliver, Quentin and Gennelle; sister-in-law, Faye Lenihan and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. A celebration for the lives of both Mum and Dad will be held at 2:00p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2018 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. A reception will follow. A private family interment service will be held in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the caregivers and staff of Shannex – Blomidon Court for their care, kindness and compassion. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory of Phyllis may be made to the White Rock Community Association or the IWK. You were such a hard worker all your life, Mum. Now it’s your turn to rest. We love you and miss you.
