David Bruce Coldwell

1938-2018

David Bruce Coldwell

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and brother, David Bruce Coldwell, 80, of Gaspereau, Kings County, on Thursday, June 14, 2018 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.  David died an unexpected and sudden death. Born on March 12, 1938 in Wolfville, he was a son of the late Bruce and Alice (Eldridge) Coldwell.  He was a quiet and gentle man with a mischievous sense of humor.  As a young boy, he marvelled at WWII aircraft roaring above his home.  Such fascination initiated his love of creating model airplanes with impeccable accuracy.  This also helped lay the foundation to his 38 year career as a model maker with the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History. Museum staff congregated in his room to share laughs and questionable lunches made on the hot plate. Many aspiring model makers, young and old, benefited from his mentorship. Patience, a passion for the natural world and creating models of just about anything were some of David’s greatest attributes.  He appreciated, valued and was kind to "all creatures great and small" and passed these traits to his children.  It wasn’t out of character for him to rescue a moth, deer mouse, feral cat or a crow, to name a few.  He had a soft spot for animals, especially cats.  Wherever he was and whatever he was doing, he considered the Gaspereau Valley his home, his serenity. He is survived by his wife, Joan (MacDonald); daughters, Jane Coldwell, New Minas; Karen (Hedley "Newt") Newton, New Ross; son, Gregory (Rachel) Coldwell, Toronto; their mother, Sheila Riley, Torbrook; sisters, Ruth (Bob) Morse, Pictou; Sandra Coldwell, Coldbrook and brother, Iain (Paul Keddy) Coldwell, Kentville. Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his brother, Lynnwood. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2018 in the Gaspereau Baptist Church, followed by a reception at the Gaspereau Community Hall. Private family burial will take place in the Gaspereau Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Valley WAAG Animal Shelter, 12-112 Front Street, Wolfville or to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
