Georgina "Georgie" Soukup

Georgina "Georgie" Anna Soukup - 91, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Orchard Court (Shannex). Born in Břeclav, Czechoslovakia, she was the daughter of the late František Vaculík and Ludmila (Koštová) Vaculíková. She immigrated to Canada in 1951 with her husband Frank after escaping to Austria from her homeland of Czechoslovakia in 1949, during the Russian occupation, and settled in Kentville. Throughout her life she enjoyed travelling, music, swimming, and gardening. She was an accomplished accordion player and occasionally performed for friends. Georgie was a survivor. She lived through both the Nazi occupation and the Russian occupation of her homeland, escaped from Czechoslovakia with her husband by crossing the border under fire from Russian soldiers and had to leave her family and her home behind. Two years after arriving as a refugee in Canada she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent two years in the Nova Scotia Sanatorium, Kentville. She was widowed at age 50 while her children were still teenagers and continued her husband’s small business selling Swiss handguns to target shooters. She is survived by a daughter, Helena Soukup, Toronto, Ontario; a son, Peter Soukup, Kentville, Nova Scotia; her granddaughter, Kyra Soukup White, Toronto and nephew Oldřich Vaculík (Jr.), Svitavy, Czech Republic. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Wenceslas Soukup (1977) and brother Oldřich Vaculík. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Shannex - Orchard Court (Shannex) for all their attention and care.
