Well-known Annapolis Valley Optician passes away


Hughie Arthur Crowell, of Kentville, passed away August 3, 2018 at the age of 78, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, following a courageous three year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born on June 26, 1940 in Wolfville to the late Arthur and Leona (Barkhouse) Crowell. A lifelong resident of Kentville, Hughie graduated from Central Kings Rural High School and went on to become a licensed Dispensing Optician over a span of 42 years. Beginning his career at Imperial Optical in Kentville, he went on to manage Shorney’s Optical in New Minas for 27 years, retiring in 2001. Hughie was a self-taught finish carpenter in his spare time, building eight of his family homes. "Good enough" was not part of his vocabulary, as he always strived for perfection, particularly in his love for carpentry and optical work. He was a long-time member of the Kentville Old Timers Hockey League. He was a lover of all sports. Hughie is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan (Lantz) Crowell, Kentville; sons, Kevin (Heather), Centre Village, NB; Darren (Susan), Bridgewater; daughter, Karla (Ronnie) Melanson, Hammonds Plains; only granddaughter, Brittany Melanson, Halifax, whom he adored; sister, Marie (Chet) Goucher, Aylesford; niece, Sherri (Brine) Kelly, Sunken Lake; sister-in-law, Shirley Lantz, Coldbrook; many cousins. In addition to his parents, Hughie was predeceased by brother-in-law, Ron Patterson. Special thanks to Dr. Ann Gordon, Dr. Karen Burch, Paulette and the Palliative Care team and the nursing staff of Medical A. Cremation has taken place. In accordance with Hughie’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. For those wishing to give in Hughie’s memory, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Association or a charity of choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
