John Louis "Jack" Corbin

John Louis "Jack" Corbin – 93, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2018 in the Veterans’ Unit at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, where he had been residing. Dad was born on January 10, 1925 and lived his whole life in Berwick, Nova Scotia. The son of David "Tom" Corbin and Josephine (Wheeler), he was predeceased by a sister, Marion in childhood, and by his brother, Albert, and sisters, Marita and Nan. Jack and his brother, Albert spent warm days in the apple orchards and ball fields until 1943, when he enlisted to serve in WW II with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Regiment. As a Private in the infantry, he was active in Canada, the UK, and Continental Europe (France and Normandy), when an injury rendered him unable to meet physical standards. He was given a medical discharge from the army in December, 1944. Dad graduated from Mack Business College in 1952, and worked as a civil servant at CFB Greenwood. He built his first house in Berwick in 1963 and his second in 1986. His marriage to Muriel June Trask in 1957 ended in divorce, and he became the sole protector and single parent to his two children, Cindy and David. Dad took up oil painting in his 40’s as a remedy for depression, doing mainly scenes of the sea and sky. He especially liked war history and the Toronto Maple Leafs. After the death of his father in 1971, his mother, Josie lived with him for the next 21 years. Sadly, his son, David James passed away in 1998 at the age of 34 from an aggressive form of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Dad is survived by his sister, Bonnie (Edgar) Mitchell; daughter, Cindy Stewart; grandson, Jade Stewart; great-grandson, Declan Stewart, with another one on the way. There will be no visitation, by request. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2018 in the Berwick Cemetery, Edgar Mitchell officiating. Donations in memory of Jack may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
