1935-2018

Llewellyn Parsons "Wendy" Alden (née Hall)

Llewellyn Parsons Alden (née Hall), affectionately known by her nickname, Wendy, aged 83, of Wolfville, passed away peacefully in her sleep during the night of Thursday, October 11, 2018. Wendy was the beloved wife of John J.W. Alden, a retired professor of history at Acadia University, Wolfville. She has been predeceased by her son, John Wenham Alden (Jack); and is survived by her husband, John; daughters, Mary Alden-Allard and Sarah Alden-Liversidge; and her sister Elizabeth Hall Hutz. She is also survived by her grandsons, Thomas W. Liversidge and James S. Allard; and also by her granddaughter, Llewellyn Parsons Liversidge. Wendy was born in New York, NY on August 20, 1935, the eldest child of Clayton Morris and Llewellyn Parsons Hall of 27 Boundinot Street, Princeton, NJ, USA. As a young girl in a park near her home, she had a brief meeting with Albert Einstein, remarking to her Nanny that he appeared to have a halo over his head (perhaps a reflection of the sun), an oft recounted remembrance which her family enjoyed. An intelligent student, Wendy attended Miss Fine’s School, the Princeton Day School, St. Timothy’s School in Stevenson, Maryland and Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, along with Sylvia Plath and Gloria Steinem. During her third year at Smith, she studied abroad in Paris, France. She also received an M.A. degree from Harvard University. She made her debut at the Bachelors’ Cotillion in Baltimore, Maryland and was a member of the New York Junior Assemblies and the Chilton Club of Boston. Wendy met her husband, John, at a reception at Christ Church, Cambridge, Massachusetts, while both attending graduate school at Harvard (Radcliffe). They were married at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport, Maine on September 5, 1959. Her favorite color was green and her favorite flower was the chrysanthemum.  Her favorite writer was Molière and her favorite music was by J.S. Bach. She spoke fluent French and taught that language at both elementary and secondary school levels. She also had a passion for the study of theology. She was a keen member of both the Episcopal Church, USA and the Anglican Church of Canada. She was elected to attend three Synods of the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and also a National Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada. She will be forever missed in this life by her family and her friends. Her funeral service will be held at the St. John’s Anglican Church, Wolfville, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018.  Burial will take place in St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Wolfville.
