Dorothy Farnsworth

1924-2018

Dorothy Farnsworth
Dorothy Farnsworth

Dorothy Farnsworth - age 94, passed away in Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck, on December 11, 2018. Born in Edmonton, Alberta to the late George and Sarah (Begley) Barnes, she was a prairie girl who came to love Nova Scotia and call it home. When the Second World War began Dorothy followed the example of her older brother, John, by enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force where she trained as a wireless operator and soon became an instructor. While serving in the Air Force she met a young airman, William (Bill) Farnsworth from Kentville, Nova Scotia. They were married in October 1943 and later moved to the Annapolis Valley where they raised their three daughters. Dorothy worked for more than 25 years as an office manager for Canada Packers in Port Williams. An avid gardener, she was a life member of the Valley Gardeners Club and spent many hours volunteering in her community and church. In 2009 she was awarded Volunteer of the Year for Port Williams. She took a great interest in traveling and in current affairs. After her husband passed away in 1986 Dorothy continued to live in the family home, volunteering in her community and tending to her gardens, and to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, in whom she took great interest, pride and delight. Her door was always open, and you could usually find at least one grandchild, or even a daughter or son-in-law, staying there while attending Acadia University or taking college courses. Her sons-in-law were her "boys" and very special to her. In 2010 she moved to an apartment and then, in 2016, to MacLeod House in Baddeck. After suffering a stroke in January 2018 she spent four months in Harbour View Veterans Unit in Sydney Mines and, in June, 2018, moved to Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck where she made many new friends. Her sense of humour and quick wit will be missed by many. Dorothy is survived by daughters, Marlene (Douglas) Mortimore; Ann (R. Charles) Thompson and Mary (Neil) Kidston; sisters, Florence Pozzobon and Agnes Hickey; grandchildren, Kimberly, Craig, Sarah, Alison, Erin, and Emily; great grandchildren Sadie, Henry, Elliott, Dorothy, Willow, Riven, Fern, Nora, and Hazel. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, William, and her brothers, John Francis and William Barnes. The family wishes to thank the nurses, care workers, and staff of Alderwood for the loving care they provided to our mother and for the kindness and support they gave to us during her final days. Thanks also to Dr. Elana Garcia del Busto, and the staff of both MacLeod House and Harbour View Veterans Unit for their care and support. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Donations in Dorothy’s name may be made to a charity of your choice.
