Jost Walo Ackermann
Born on March 14th, 1937, in Bern, Switzerland, to Brigadier-General Robert and Milly (Kellenberger) Ackermann, Jost Ackermann died peacefully at Grand View Manor nursing home in Berwick on June 2, 2019. Jost had a varied and interesting career. He was an officer in the Swiss army, and after immigration to Canada, a float-plane pilot, teacher, dairy farmer, pure-bred Holstein breeder, forester, and organic gardener whose gardens were textbook perfect. Jost approached all his endeavours with enthusiasm and great attention to detail. His work was always planned carefully, and carried out with imagination and an eye to beauty and usefulness. He always left wherever he lived in better shape than when he arrived. Jost is survived by his wife, the former Helen Kirkconnell, Wolfville; two children, Lotti Ackermann, Ottawa; Adrian (Andy), Betula Farms, Shubenacadie; their mother, Elisabeth Ackermann, Halifax; three grandchildren, Lotti’s son, Ethan and Andy’s son and daughter, Ben and Laura; three stepchildren, Catherine Campbell, Toronto, David (Jen) Campbell, Dartmouth; children, Flora and Daphne, Margie Campbell (Greg) Sarre, Adelaide Hills, South Australia; children, Maddie, Isabel, and Oscar, and children of deceased stepdaughter, Janet Campbell (Rod McDougal), SA, Ross and Laura. Jost is also survived by three siblings in Switzerland, Eloni-Madeleine Ackermann, Christine Lips-Ackermann, and Markus (Bea) Ackermann, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Ruth Reuter-Ackermann, and Valery Schmid-Ackermann. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service, by request. There will be a celebration of Jost’s life at a later date, with burial on the island in the lake he created in the forest on the family farm. The family would like to thank the staff of Chase Unit at Grand View Manor for their excellent care of Jost during his years there, and especially for their loving attention in recent weeks following surgery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
