Curtis Holmes Chipman … 99, of Wolfville, passed away Wednesday,
July 1, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in
Saint John, New Brunswick on June 24, 1910, he was the youngest child
of the late Alvah and Mabel (DeWitt) Chipman. He grew up in Hampton
Village, Kings County, New Brunswick, attending school there and
graduating from Saint John High School in 1926. Upon graduation, he
started work in the Bank of Montreal, Union Street Branch, Saint John.
Subsequently, he was employed in the investment business for over 50
years with the exception of 1942-1946 when he served in the Second
World War, achieving the rank of Captain in the R.C.A.P.C. On August
24, 1934, he married Margaret Hunter Tapley of Saint John. They
resided in Bedford from 1940 until 1961 at which time they moved to
Wolfville. While in Bedford, he owned and operated a successful dry
goods business, Kings Bedford. He was active in the Bedford Baptist
Church, the Home and School Association, Tennis Club and the Volunteer
Fire Department. In Wolfville, he held various positions in the
Wolfville Baptist Church, served on the board of the Eastern Kings
Memorial Hospital, with Interfaith Housing and with others. He
provided leadership in financial campaigns for the Hospital, Acadia
University and the Wolfville Library Foundation. The pursuit of his
interest in the natural world resulted in life memberships in the
Blomidon Naturalist Society and in the Nova Scotia Bird Society. As a
Rotarian, he was made a Paul Harris Fellow and in 1993, he was granted
an honorary DCL degree by Acadia University. A loving husband and
father, he is survived by children, Fred (Nancy), Wolfville; Carol
(Ron) Buckley, Port Williams; Beth, Westbrook, Connecticut; eight
grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; one great great
granddaughter. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret in 2005; a
son, Lowell in 1953; siblings, Fred in 1978, Sidney in 2000, Carol
Nobel in 1996. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the
White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There
will be no visitation, by family request. A memorial service will be
held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 14, 2009 in the Wolfville Baptist
Church. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will
take place at a later date in the Brookside Cemetery, Bedford.
