Mr. Keith Elmer Mahar
1925-2010
MAHAR, Keith Elmer - 84, of Dartmouth, formerly of New Minas. It is
with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our loving
husband, father, brother and grandfather on Friday Feb. 26, 2010 at
Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Grafton, Kings County on August 5,
1925, he was the son of the late Elmer Keith Mahar and Pauline Paige
Mahar. He will be sadly missed by wife Jean, Dartmouth; brother,
Kenneth (Annie), Grafton; children, Robert (Judy), Halifax; Bruce
(Carolyn), Dartmouth; Janice (Robbie), Rhode Island; grandchildren,
Sean, Ian, Andrew and Nicole and many nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by nephew, John Mahar. Keith was an avid sailor, ham radio
operator, stained glass artist and had an interest in history and
genealogy. He wrote a short biography of Kingsport boatbuilder Earl
Irving which is now on file at the Canning Heritage Centre. He was
involved in Scouting and spent several years as a Cub Scout Leader.
Keith was a schoolteacher for 35 years and taught at Hantsport High
School, Hantsport; Yorktown Collegiate Institute, Saskatchewan;
Cornwallis District High School, Canning and Central Kings Rural High
School, Cambridge. He graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor
of Science in chemistry and math in 1947 and a Bachelor of Education
in 1948. He later attended Columbia University, New York graduating in
1956 with a Master of Arts in Education. Keith had a long-time
interest in teaching high school physics and was always interested in
following the achievements of his former students. There will be no
visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception,
will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in the White Family
Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Judith Tod Gates officiating. Burial
will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Donations in
memory may be made to the Canadian Paraplegic Association. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and
Cremation Services, Kentville.
