Kenneth Leroy Mahar - 90, of Middleton, formerly of Grafton, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2013 in the Veterans’ Unit of Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Kenneth was born in Mount Denson to Elmer and Paige (Pineo) Mahar on August 25, 1922. Kenneth was a proud member of the Canadian Army Service Corps, serving three years as a dispatch driver in Europe during the Second World War. Ken owned and operated Mahar’s General Store for over 30 years.  He was an active member of Grafton United Baptist Church, a scout leader, a member of the Cornwallis Square Council and served on many other local groups. He was a longtime member of the Waterville and District Fire Department and the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch 69, Berwick. Ken enjoyed many sports and participated on local softball and hockey teams. He was a founding member of the Berwick Curling Club and a member of Paragon Golf Club for many years. He also liked sailing and canoeing. Ken will be remembered for his smile, laugh and love of life. Ken is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Annie (Marchant), Berwick;  daughter, Ginny (John) Eaton, Somerset;  grandson, John K. (Katie) Eaton, Middle Musquodoboit; granddaughter, Lori (Shawn) Wilson,  Hammonds Plains. Also by his great-grandchildren, whom he delighted in visiting with and hearing about their antics: John G. Eaton, Ryan and Ella Wilson. Also survived by several nephews and nieces. Ken was predeceased by a son, John Elmer and brother, Keith. Special thank you to all staff and volunteers of the Veterans’ Wing for their wonderful care of Ken. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.  Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
