Alexander Y. Shalin

Alexander Y. Shalin - 56, of Kentville, passed away suddenly as the result of a motor vehicle accident on Thursday, December 19, 2013. Born in Shostka, Ukraine he was the son of the late Yurii and Lubov Shalin. He immigrated to Canada in 2001 and had been employed as a supervisor with the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture at the Kentville Research Station. He received his education in Ukraine, receiving top honours in high school and university. He received his PhD in biology and was a third generation scientist, specializing in plant physiology. He was a true gentleman and a gentle man with a great sense of humor. Alexander had a profound love for his wife and son and put his family first. He enjoyed traveling and discovering new things. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lyudmyla "Luda", Kentville and a son, Andrew, Halifax; his mother-in-law, Valentyna Gushak, Kentville; a sister-in-law, Tanya (Leonid) Chernyavska, Truro; a nephew, Vlad; a niece, Olya. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Peter Gushak. Cremation will take place. A memorial service, followed by a reception will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
