Elizabeth Josephine Walker

1934-2014

Elizabeth Josephine Walker

Elizabeth Josephine (Sears) Walker, RN - It is with great sadness that the family of Elizabeth "Betty" Josephine (Sears) Walker announce her passing on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the age of 80. She resided in Cambridge, Kings County for 46 years and spent her last few years at Grand View Manor in Berwick, Nova Scotia. She was born to Annie Mae (Welch) Sears and Arthur Sears on March 19, 1934 at the All Saints Hospital in Springhill, Nova Scotia. She attended the United Baptist Church and schooling in Springhill. She spent winters skating on Sears' Pond and summers at Five Islands and Peggy's Cove. In 1952, she moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and trained as a Registered Nurse at the Nova Scotia Hospital.  She was both a supervisor and teacher of nursing at the NSH and also worked at the Grace Maternity and the Victoria General Hospitals in Halifax. In 1955, she married the late Charles Watson Walker, formerly of Dartmouth who worked for Canada Post and had two sons, Paul Winfred of Rusagonis, New Brunswick (Carolyn Roberts) and Graham Bruce of Alberta. In 1968, she moved to Cambridge, Kings County, with her family to take the position of Director of Nursing at the former Waterville Hospital, now the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre. While living in the Valley she had two more children, Steven Watson of Cambridge (Dawn Silver) and Jane Elizabeth of Hong Kong (Craig Smith). In 1973, she resigned from this position to raise her family. During the following years she was a member of the Cambridge United Baptist Church to which she faithfully brought her family. She supported the Cambridge Church Workers, Cambridge Women's Institute both as president and member and Missionary Moments as treasurer. She took great joy in raising her family, caring for farm animals, gardening, picking berries, making jams and jellies, pickling, bird watching, baking pies and her neighbourhood-famous bread rolls. In 1983, she returned to nursing as supervisor at the former Palmeter's Country Home (Evergreen Home for Special Care) and as a supervisor at the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre during 1992-93. In 1991, she suffered the loss of her husband of 32 years to cancer.  For the later years of her life she found much solace and strength in her loving and devoted family, especially her grandchildren, Adam and Alexandra, Reegan, Sarah and Rebekah, Calvin and Hope, Lachlan and Watson, Maura and Duncan.  She also continued her involvement at church and with her dear friends in and around Camro Place in Cambridge. Betty was predeceased by her parents, husband, brothers, Graham, Kenny and Mannie "Art" and by her sisters, Barbara, Kay (Kathleen) Judy, Sheila and MaryEllen. She is survived and dearly loved by her sisters, Cassie, Ontario; Janice and Linda, Dartmouth; her brother, David, Indian Harbour and also by her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The family of Betty wishes to extend the deepest of thanks to the wonderful staff on the Ross and Franey Units and throughout Grand View Manor who truly are the best staff in the world. They provided such loving care of Betty and her family during her stay and treated her with both dignity and great concern for her comfort. The funeral will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the Cambridge United Baptist Church, Reverend Darryl Dykens officiating. Betty will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Cambridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make donations in memory to Osteoporosis Canada, www.osteoporosis.ca.
