John A. Whamond

John Alexander Whamond - 86, of New Minas, Kings County, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 7, 2014 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville surrounded by his loving family. Born December 17, 1927 in Kerriemuir, Scotland he was a son of the late Francis and Wilhelmina Whamond. John attended high school at Dundee High and Strathallen. At age sixteen near the end of World War II he enlisted in the Royal Air Force becoming a Sergeant and a Lancaster Bomber Pilot. He later worked at A and R Scott Milling Company. John immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1955, and worked for Toronto Elevators followed by a long career in the food industry as production and plant manager in companies such as Singer Foods, Toronto; Kraft Foods, Montreal, PQ; Scotian Gold, Graves, and Cobi Foods in the Annapolis Valley. John played for the Toronto Scottish Rugby Club and continued to play until the age of forty two. He enjoyed music and played the ukulele, banjo, and harmonica entertaining family and friends with music and song. John was a member of the Dukes of Kent, a Master Mason of Kentville Lodge No. 58 and a past patron of Evangeline Chapter No. 15 O.E.S. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather and will be sadly missed by all. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ivy Janet "Jan" (Burn) who was born in Scotland; three daughters, Lynn (Frank Lewis), Olds, Alberta; Joanne (Greg Davidson), Wolfville; Rhona (Gary Sampson), Timberlea; a son, Bill (Michelle), New Minas; grandchildren, Ryan and Aaron Lewis, Miranda and Nathan Sampson, Alex and Justin Whamond, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald, a sister, Wilma and  a nephew Graham. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. No visitation or flowers by family request. A private family service will be held at a later date. Donation in John's honor may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Mike Sinclair and all the staff of the Medical Unit at the Valley Regional Hospital, also Reverend Tim Archibald for his thoughts and prayers.
