 Avard Spurgeon Jordan

Avard Spurgeon Jordan - 83, of Gaspereau Mountain, Kings County, passed away peacefully September 8, 2014, surrounded and supported by family and God's grace in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on March 22, 1931 on the Gaspereau Mountain, he was a son of the late Fred and Edna (Card) Jordan. Avard was raised on the family homestead and would later become owner of that farm. Avard worked at Acadia University as a painter and supervisor for over 20 years, an active member of #968 Operating Engineers Union, retiring early because of health concerns. Avard was involved in community and church. He was a trustee on the School Board at the time of amalgamation and during the construction of the original Horton District High and Gaspereau Elementary Schools. He was a lifelong member of the Apostolic Church, Gaspereau Mountain Assembly and filled the roles of Deacon, Elder, Overseer and Sunday School teacher. Avard donated much of the lumber used in the 1985 expansion of the church now called Mountain Christian Centre. Avard married the love of his life, Hannah Mary (Wile) on October 13, 1951. Avard truly loved people and his family was his pride and joy. He is survived by his wife, Hannah; five children, Brian (Lois), Black River Lake;  Nancy (Peter) Levy, Wolfville Ridge; Charles (Hannah Jane), New Minas; Cameron (Betty), Gaspereau Mountain; Michael (Tammy), Berwick; sister, Clara (Gordon) Rafuse, Berwick; sister-in-law, Marguerite Jordan,  Gaspereau Mountain; 13 grandchildren, Jared, Melodie, Kristen, Nicholas (Stephanie), Sarai, Nakita (Peter), Laura (Fisher), Erin (Kim), Tyler, Jessie (Victor), Cole, Kyle and Kelsey; nine great grandchildren, Sebastian, Paxton, Xavier, Hannah, Isabella, Julia, Samuel, Sophie and Naomi; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, JulieAnna; four sisters, Mildred (Melvin) Walsh, Frances (Ivan) Davison, Nellie (Basil) Milbury and Doris (Lawrence) Regan; three brothers, Lawrence (Violet), Raleigh and Lennlie. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2014, Pastor Bruce Patstone officiating. Burial will take place in the Greenfield Cemetery, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Mountain Christian Centre, Gaspereau Mountain. No flowers by request, due to allergies. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
