Dorothy Marie (Van Allen) Kirkpatrick, formerly of Kentville and Centreville, died in Halifax on September 11, 2014. Born on October 23, 1922, she left a career in the fashion industry to marry Halifax native Donald Hartley Kirkpatrick in 1946 after a wartime romance. Together they settled in Kentville where he established his medical practise and they raised their five children. They were inseparable until Donald’s death in 1997 after 51 years of marriage. She is survived by her father-in-law’s second wife, Gene Kirkpatrick; five children, Sharon Fairbairn (Edmund), Linda (Laurie), David (Paula), Susan (Lloyd) and Kate (Michael) and also by grandchildren, Douglas Fairbairn, Carolynn Britton (Jason), Kirk Mills (Adelle), Katie Kirkpatrick (Mark), Matthew Kirkpatrick, Leigh Kirkpatrick and William Kirkpatrick (Erin), as well as great grandchildren, Leah and Eilam Britton, Marley and Josie Lin Mills, Serra and Jared Kirkpatrick, a sister, Marjorie Cole, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, John Jay Van Allen and Catherine Caroline Hummel, and her brothers, Ken, Bob and Gene Van Allen. We, the family, wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Ivany Place for their kindness and compassionate care during our mother’s final years.
