Daryl Sylvanus Gates

Daryl Sylvanus Gates (75) died in hospital on October 9, 2014. He was the son of Sylvanus and Blanche (Naugler) Gates and grew up in Port Williams, where he lived most of his life. Daryl studied at Acadia and did graduate work at the University of Alberta. During his career as a school administrator, he was involved in professional organizations, in-service development, and student activities. He worked in Winnipeg, The Pas, Canning and New Minas. He was respected and held in affection by colleagues and students alike. Daryl studied voice with Leonard Mayo and Robert Irwin, and won major festival awards for his fine tenor voice. He was a member of the first Manning Memorial Chapel Choir at Acadia. For many years he served as church organist and choir director, and served on various church committees and activities. Daryl was married to the Reverend Judith Tod with whom he raised three children: Jennifer Gates-Flaherty (John), Christopher (Leah), and Kathryn Kotze (Gavin). Daryl had really special affections for his five grand-daughters Makyla, Rachel, Clara, Tess and Ella Jo and two grandsons Harlan and Leland. In retirement years, he married Dr. Homer Noble and moved to Torbrook Mines, where he spent happy hours enjoying his art studio, playing his grand piano, and cooking. The Nobles welcomed "Uncle Daryl" as one of theirs. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, October 19, at the Wolfville Baptist Church, Rev. Doctor Barry Morrison officiating assisted by Rev. Michael Mugford. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for Sherbrook Lake United Church Camp (tel: 765-4423), Torbrook Mines United Church (tel: 765-4572), Wolfville Baptist Church, or to a charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
