Laurie Garfield Hayes - 93, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 22, 2014. Born in Coldbrook, he was a son of the late Garfield and Zilphy (Fuller) Hayes. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Royal Canadian Service Corps. During the war, he served three and a half years overseas in England, Belgium, France, Holland and Germany. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville, where he served as Past President and had received a 50-year pin along with many other honors. Together with his three brothers, he ran a lumber mill, Hayes Mill Ltd. in Coldbrook for many years until his retirement in 1976. He was a founding member of the Coldbrook and District Apple Valley Seniors. He enjoyed travelling, spending winters in Florida and taking the opportunity to return to England and Holland. He was a member of the KenWo Golf and Country Club, Eagle Crest Golf Club and the Glooscap Curling Club. He is survived by a daughter, Marie Jean (Ludie) Gallant, Coldbrook; a son, Leslie Laurie (Myrna), Cambridge; a granddaughter, Sheena (Bobby) Pedersen; a great grandchild, Maddox; his companion, Muriel Butler. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie Angeline (Perry); two sisters, Muriel Yeaton and Edna Hughes; three brothers, Robert, John and Roy. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion service and funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 27, 2014 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Burial will take place in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Kentville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses or the Valley Regional Hospital - Carey Me Fund. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
