Dorothy E. E. MacKenzie

1920-2014

Dorothy E. E. MacKenzie

Dorothy Ella Elizabeth (Gates) MacKenzie of Wolfville, NS passed into the hands of the Lord and under the loving care of the Wolfville Nursing Home on Saturday, December 6, 2014. Born on June 16, 1920 in New Ross, she was the daughter of the late Percy Willard Gates and Eva Amanda (Hennigar) Gates. Mom was a wise and courageous woman who through her faith demonstrated her life values. She was fondly referred to by her great grandchildren as "Super Grammy". For over 65 years Mom lived in Wolfville and was a member of the Wolfville Baptist Church. In her church life she served as Deacon, taught Sunday school, was a member of the Woman's Missionary Group, attended Bible Study and was a passionate provider of home visitations. She was a long standing member and supporter of the Wolfville Ridge Club until it was disbanded in 1996. Mom created quilts for all her children and grandchildren, upon retiring she became an artist, swam and exercised daily until she was in her late 80's. She enjoyed yoga with her last headstand at the age of 75 when she decided "it was time to stop standing on her head". Mom was an avid outdoor enthusiast, interested in flora and fauna and loved spending time at our family cottage on Gaspereau Lake. Mom loved cooking and was famous for her baked beans, Boston brown bread and apple pies. Mom loved games such as crokinole, dominos and scrabble and took great joy in beating us, which always brought her special laugh and a twinkle in her eye. The final years of Mom's life saw Alzheimer's steal her memories and her mobility. She never lost her humor and the ability to deliver a quick come back. Mom is survived by her children, Brenda (Jim) Johnston, Oakfield; Cathy MacKenzie, Wolfville; Marybeth Hay, Tancook Island; Debbie Hennigar, Kentville; Wendy MacKenzie, Greenwood; Harold (Joyce) MacKenzie, New Minas. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, David (Michelle) Johnston, CarolAnn (Michael) Tesfaye, Timothy (Mary) Margeson, Lisa (James) Belen, Susan (Paul) Gray, Katherine (Ricky) Cross, Matthew (Jessica Berry) Hennigar, Amanda Hennigar, Trevor (Jill) Hennigar, Justin (Carrie) MacKenzie and Jordan MacKenzie. In addition, she is survived by 11 great grandchildren, Rylee, Sophie and Quinn Johnston, MacKenzie and Callum Belen, Kathryn, Nathan, Miranda and Connor Gray, Morgan Hennigar and Lauren Hennigar. Mom was the youngest of her siblings and is survived by her next oldest sister, Beulah Doherty, Wolfville, and was predeceased by her husband, Harold MacKenzie; children, CarolAnn and Darlene (in childhood); brothers and sisters, Frances Gates, Leitha Gates (in childhood), Lettie Walker, John Gates, Foster Gates, Pauline Smith, Marjorie Alberta Redden and Eileen Rafuse.
