Sylvia Mary Stuchbery

Sylvia Mary Stuchbery - Age 77, Wolfville, NS/ Tryon, PEI. We announce with heavy hearts the peaceful passing at home on December 19, 2014 of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Born in Sheffield, England in 1937, she was the daughter of the late Francis Alan and Laura Ellen (Poole) Doughty. Sylvia's early years were spent in Darlington, Co. Durham. She earned her teaching degree at Homerton College, Cambridge, where she met the love of her life Ian Stuchbery. They were married in 1959 and enjoyed a long, happy 55 year marriage. Sylvia was a talented and gifted educator whose 40 year career included teaching at St. John's Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg and St. George's School in Montreal until her retirement in 1999. Sylvia and Ian retired to Tryon, PEI where they enjoyed life with their dog, Dodie and their involvements in the community and at St. Paul's Church, Charlottetown. In 2008 they moved to the Tideways Community in Wolfville, NS, where she was active in numerous clubs, organizations and at St. John's, Wolfville. As the wife of an Anglican priest, her faith and church involvements were central to her life. Her extensive church involvements included travel worldwide with Ian on behalf of the church, the Cursillo movement, numerous prayer groups and many ministries in the churches where Ian was the rector: St. Mary at Latton, England, Christ Church Cathedral and St. Philip's, Montreal, St. Matthew's, Winnipeg and St. Barnabas, St. Lambert. Sylvia loved travelling, sewing, gardening, baking and reading, but most of all she loved entertaining family and friends. Sylvia and Ian were known for their fabulous Boxing Day parties and English tea parties. She is survived by her husband, Ian; daughter, Alison (Paul) Lannan; sons, Michael (Tracy), Nicholas (Angela); brother, Roger Doughty (Sandra); grandchildren, Nicola, Alexandra, Robert and Matthew Lannan; Benjamin, Jonathan and Emily Stuchbery; Spencer, Finn and Cooper Stuchbery; nephews and nieces Nigel (Lisa), Amanda (Stewart) and Vanessa (Khan) and their children. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2014 at the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville NS. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 23, 2014 at St. James Anglican Church, Kentville. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Cancer Society.
