WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF PORT WILLIAMS PASSES AWAY

 

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Elinor Florence Miller - 77, of Port Williams, Kings County, after a brief illness. Elinor died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre - VG Site, Halifax. Born in Wolfville, she was the daughter of the late Randolph and Mabel (Coldwell) Gertridge. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who always enjoyed helping others. She graduated from Mack Business College and worked for a Wolfville law office, the CBC and a number of banks in the Maritime region. After 20 years of service, she retired from the Royal Bank of Canada in Wolfville. She was a devoted member of the Port Williams United Baptist Church where she served on numerous committees, including the Children's Christian Worship. Elinor was awarded a Life Membership in the Nova Scotia Women's Institute and served for many years as the President of the Port Williams Library Association and as an active member of the Liberal Party.  She was a member of the Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital Foundation, a former member of the Liverpool Kinette Club as well as a 4-H and C.G.I.T. leader.  From a young age, Elinor was an Apple Blossom Festival enthusiast. She represented the Town of Wolfville as Princess and continued to be an active volunteer with the festival in many capacities. Elinor was an extraordinary hostess making her home available for countless meetings, social and fund-raising events. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Kenneth L. "Budd" Miller; three sons, Randolph K. "Randy" Miller (Martin Lajoie), Ottawa; Scott D. Miller (Carmen Dewar-Miller), Mount Denson; Steven J. Miller (Melanie), Mount Denson; two sisters, Carlene (Nic) Polak and their children, Caron and Douglas, Bedford; Marilynn Carey and her daughter, Stephanie, Gaspereau; five grandchildren, Jessica, Jillian, Abby, Sam, and Max; special aunt, Pat Meagher, Dartmouth; a brother-in-law, Douglas Miller, Dartmouth; and other extended family members. She was predeceased by an infant granddaughter, Mabel Mae; a loving aunt, Nell Coldwell; and a brother-in-law, William "Bill" Carey. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2015 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A Public Celebration of Elinor's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the Port Williams United Baptist Church, Reverend David Ogilvie officiating. A reception will follow in the Port Williams Community Centre. Family flowers only by request. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation - Carey-Me Program (Supporting Palliative Care in the Home) or the Port Williams United Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
