Wanda Marie Hebb

1942-2015

Wanda Marie Hebb

Wanda Marie Hebb of New Minas, Nova Scotia, passed away at age 72 in the loving arms of her daughters on January 5, 2015. Born December 25, 1942, during a blizzard and back in her grandmother’s house in the country. She was a Polio survivor from the 1951 epidemic that ravaged Nova Scotia at that time, at the age of 8. After having spent a couple of years in hospital, far away from her sisters and brothers, she came home. Living about a mile from the school house and there being no vehicle available, the community bought her a beautiful red 4-wheeled wagon and the bigger boys hauled her to school.  She has been obliged to wear a leg brace and walk with a cane all of her life, without which she wouldn’t have been able to accomplish as much as she did.  She went on with her schooling and eventually became a top notch secretary.  She worked for various businesses, retiring finally at Dalhousie University in 2000. In 1966 she met the love of her life Mel Hebb and together they raised two daughters Jacqueline (Andrew) Langille and Catherine (Tyrone) Hebb-Carvery. Mel died very unexpectedly in 1999 and it was a great struggle without him. She has 4 wonderful grandchildren: Zack Delaney, Myannah Carvery, Taylah Carvery and Arreyah Carvery. She leaves behind also her sisters: Gloria (Fred) Royal, Grace Caldwell and Valeri (David) Webster, and brothers Douglas (Lu) Schofield, Kevin Schofield and Stephen Schofield.  She was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Hatfield. Wanda always felt very grateful to her brace makers who also repaired them when needed, without which she couldn’t function. She loved to travel and bought herself a scooter which served her very well when she took Jacqueline on a cruise to the Caribbean in 2007, then another time with Catherine to Bermuda in 2010. Then in 2013 she took her baby sister Val on a western vacation to see the gorgeous Rocky Mountains. Such trips would always stay with her. When at home she loved to knit and bake beautiful bread for her family. Nothing pleased her more than when her daughters and husbands and grandchildren would all come for dinner. This made her very happy.  Wanda believed deeply in God and tried to live her life with Christian values in treating others as she would like to be treated. In her retirement you would often find her sitting in her gazebo reading a great book, or simply enjoying a warm, sunny day, or chatting with a friend. A celebration of Wanda’s life will be held on Saturday January 10th at 10 am at North Alton Baptist Church, Kentville, NS, with a reception following. Interment will follow in Newcombville, Nova Scotia, beside her beloved Mel. Donations may be made to charity of choice in Wanda’s memory.
