Carole Christine Trites
1939-2015
Carole Christine Trites - 75, of Hantsport, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, Wednesday, January 21, 2015 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Kentville, she was the only daughter of the late Dr. Vernon Douglas and Mabel Henrietta (Macpherson) Schaffner. Universally, two phrases have been used by all those who met her: "What a character!" and "She was a force to be reckoned with." She completed her nursing training and post-graduate operating room procedures at the Royal Victory Hospital in Montreal, Bachelor of Nursing degree and the first year of her Master of Business Administration at Dalhousie University. Over a 55 year career, she served in the nursing profession in various capacities, from palliative care, obstetrics, operating room, and patient care in hospitals, as a flight nurse and nursing supervisor in the military and in civilian facilities, and for the past ten years, working in long-term care, most recently at Evergreen Home for Special Care. It was only as a result of her brief illness that she finally stopped working in the field which she loved and through which she touched countless lives. She was athletic, adventurous, courageous, outrageous and compassionate. She loved animals, especially horses and dogs, fast cars, skating, swimming, and any gathering of people where laughter prevailed. She lived a remarkable life and had a gift of sharing her stories with openness and humour. She was a woman of deep faith and a member and elder of St. John's Presbyterian Church, Windsor. She is survived by a son, John (Elaine) Trites, Falmouth; two daughters, Carole (Donald) Ells, Falmouth; Tara (Fraser) Firth, Bible Hill; two brothers, Bob (Marilyn) Schaffner, Kentville; Dr. John (Kathie) Schaffner, Port Williams; six grandchildren, Jason Trites, Dr. Natasha Ewert, Sean (Jeanette Penny) Ewert, Elizabeth Ewert, Kaitlyn Firth and Jacob Firth; a great granddaughter, Aubrey Ewert; nieces and nephews.
