Lenly Roscoe "Ross" Potter - 95, of Wolfville, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2015 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. He was born in Meadowville, Annapolis County, on October 21, 1919, second child of the late Manning Rodrick and Mary Elizabeth (Potter) Potter. He graduated from the Provincial Teachers' College, Truro, in 1941, and, after nine years of teaching, he attended Acadia University where he received a B.A. (1952), M.A. (English) (1953) and B.Ed. Ross was on staff at Horton District High School when it opened in 1959; he taught there for ten years and then served as an administrator for an additional 13 years. He retired in 1982, having served for 39 years in the education field, a career marked by noteworthy dedication to the profession and to the welfare of his students and fellow teachers. His gifts and interests were varied. As a genealogist and history buff, he was particularly knowledgeable about the Potter Family and the Coldwell-Bishop-Duncanson clan, and was a valued member of the Board of Directors of the Bishop Family Association. His book, Gaspereau, A River Runs Through It (2007) has been received with popular appeal. In the summer of 2000, he was the prime mover in obtaining a monument in the Gaspereau Cemetery to the memory of Perez Coldwell ("the man from Gaspereau"). For several years Ross was the artistic consultant and "unregistered architect" for the builders' consortium known as Knights' Bridge. He was a member of the Wolfville Baptist Church, where he served in various capacities including clerk and deacon. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers' Union, and an alumnus of Acadia Divinity College. He is survived by his much-loved daughter, Shelley Elizabeth (Dr. Martin Fleckenstein); grandchildren, Benjamin Ross (his namesake) and Norah Clare; step-son, Gregory (Terry) Kavanagh (Emma, Graydon, Adam and Sydney) of Toronto; step-daughter, Dale Kavanagh (Thomas Kirchhoff and daughter, Melissa) of Iserlohn, Germany; sister, Elizabeth Viola (the late Dr. Thomas Rogers), Shelburne; several nieces and nephews and dozens of cousins.He was predeceased by his sister, Winifred Emeno, Pinehurst (1957) and brother, Leland Winfield, Berwick (1998). Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, January 26, 2015 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2015 in the Wolfville Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Barry Morrison, Rev. Timothy McFarland and Rev. Sterling Gosman officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Willow Bank Cemetery, Wolfville. Memorial donations may be made to the Nictaux Cemetery, the Court House Museum, Kentville, or the Wolfville Baptist Church.
