Charles Edward "Ed" Lloyd

Charles Edward "Ed" Lloyd
Charles Edward "Ed" Lloyd

Charles Edward ‘Ed’ Lloyd – 96, of Kentville.  The Lloyd family sadly announce the peaceful passing of their loving father on February 6, 2015 in the Veterans’ Unit of the Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton NS.  Ed was born in Waterville NS on September 3, 1918, the fourth child of the late Charles Henry Lloyd 1877-1935 and late Carrie Elizabeth Mahaney 1879-1942.  His schooling in Berwick NS ended at age 17 when his father died.  To support his family, in 1936 he began operating the family sawmill on Mill Street in Berwick during the summers, and hired out as a sawyer during the winters for several sawmill owners, working at various locations over the next 7 years.  Notably, some of the wood he cut was used to construct the hangars at the Greenwood RCAF air base.  Ed joined the RCAF in March 1943 and received pilot training through the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, graduating with his wings in the fall of 1944.  He married Carol Grace Steele of Scots Bay NS on October 25, 1944.  He was honourably released in January 1945 as the War was ending.  In the late 1940s, Ed worked in Scots Bay as a sawyer and also operated a stave and heading mill for Joseph Steele. In October 1951, Ed began work with the NS Department of Lands and Forests as Chief Ranger for Kings County.  He designed a truck for fighting forest fires that became the prototype for other similar vehicles.  In 1960, he transferred to the Department’s Extension Division, where he worked with NS lumber manufacturers, consulting on design and upgrade of sawmills to increase production and make effective use of wood reserves.  He was active in Cubs and Scouts, and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge. He retired from the Department in November 1981 as Manager, Forest Industry Development, and truly enjoyed his retirement.  He researched the history of the Lloyd family for several years and was a fine woodworker, building several desks and other furniture for family and friends.  He and Carol enjoyed playing bridge, travelling and made many camping trips across Canada and the U.S.  They celebrated their 50th anniversary on a bus tour to Branson, MO.   In 1995, he and Carol helped found the Kings Presbyterian Church in New Minas.  He designed and crafted a Baptismal Font that he presented to the Church in 1996 in memory of his and Carol’s parents.  In addition to his parents, Ed was predeceased by his wife Carol Grace (Steele) Lloyd 1923-2012; younger brother Willis Hilson 1921-1944; older sisters Thelma Geneva (Ray) 1901-1993, Bernice Edna Leona (Ethier) 1910-2001 and Hazel Marie 1914-2001; and niece Marjorie Geneva Ray (Regan) 1923-1997.  He is survived by son Barry Willis, Kentville; daughter Judith Lynne, Victoria BC; nephew Harold Francis Ray, Berwick; niece Janet Rosalind Ethier (Pineo), New Minas; and great-nieces and great-nephews.  We are grateful for the thoughtful care provided by the Careforce team in his home and the medical team in the Veterans’ Unit.  Cremation has occurred and there will be no visitation.  A celebration of Ed’s life followed by a reception will be held February 11, 2015 at 11 AM at Kings Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Tim Archibald.  Interment at Scots Bay Cemetery.  Donations can be made to the Last Post Fund, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.  Funeral arrangements by White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.  Condolences and inquiries can be directed to: www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
