Fred Whalen - 72, of Somerset, Kings County, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2015 at home. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late David and Beatrice (Brison) Whalen. Fred spent 21 years with the Royal Canadian Air Force and then worked for 15 years at the House of Commons in Ottawa, with eight years as Chief of Maintenance Services. Fred was elected to Kings County Council in 1997, retiring in 2012, having served 10 consecutive years as Warden. He also served for six years on the board of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities, two years as chairman of the rural caucus. Fred was a member of the Black Rock Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee. Fred also enjoyed spending time with his family and travelling. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Anne Mason; two daughters, Debbie Whalen, Wolfville and Sandra Kloeber, Sugarland, Texas; a son, David Whalen (Donna), Dartmouth; three sisters, Hope Whalen (Doug), Marilyn McKinney (John) and Lisa Whalen (Daryl); two brothers, Peter Whalen, Toronto and Bryce Whalen (Sharon), Canaan; five grandchildren, Joanne, Meagan, Ryan, Hannah and Mason; three great grandchildren, Maya, Madison and Mackenzie; several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service, by request.  A family gathering will be held at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Children's  Wish Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
