Michael Mont "Mike" Smith

Michael Mont "Mike" Smith - 77, of New Minas, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2015, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Silas A. and Alice G. (Lamont) Smith. As a youth, he was involved with Scouting and became a Queen's Scout. He enjoyed the outdoors, specifically hunting on the Grand Pré dykes. By forming a waterskiing club at Lumsden Dam, he was instrumental in bringing the sport to this part of Nova Scotia. As chairman of officials for Swim Nova Scotia, he enjoyed being involved at the provincial, national and international levels of competitive swimming for many years. Following his retirement from Acadia University, he and his wife Patricia enjoyed taking many road trips throughout the United States and Canada. He is survived by his wife, the former Patricia J. Dooley; stepchildren, Kirsten and Alex MacDonald; his first wife, Catherine Singleton. He was predeceased by a son, Trevor Michael Smith. Cremation has taken place. According to Mike's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will take place at a later date in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. A special thank-you to Dr. Lawrence Title of Halifax. The family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.
