Dorothy Catherine Findlay

1927-2015

Dorothy Catherine Findlay

FINDLAY (Jarvis), Dorothy Catherine passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2015 at home in Kentville, Nova Scotia at the age of 87. Born in Scotland she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Jarvis. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland with her degree in Fine Arts and the University of Glasgow with her degree in Education. In 1950 she married the love of her life, Dr. John Findlay. Prior to immigrating to Halifax in the early 1960’s, she had several showings of her art work and enjoyed teaching for several years. After moving to Halifax with her husband, their two daughters and her parents, Dorothy supported her husband as he established himself in his teaching and research at the Dalhousie Dental School and later as he built his thriving periodontal practice. Together they welcomed their third daughter in 1964. Dorothy was an accomplished and talented artist who specialized in the area of sculpture. She had many successful showings of her work in both Scotland and Canada, and declined several opportunities to teach art in Canada. She was a kind, thoughtful, generous and elegant individual who loved her family, laughter, music, reading, and friends. While Dorothy enjoyed a good discussion about politics or the state of education, she was just as happy reading a story to her grandchildren. Over the years she was an active volunteer in the community with organizations such as the YWCA, Canadian Cancer Society, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and many others, She is survived by her daughters Lorna Findlay, Halifax; Eleanor (Gary) Humphries, Hackett’s Cove; Patricia Findlay-Williamson, Kentville; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Margaret (Smith) Jarvis, her sister Floree and her husband, John Findlay. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held 2:00 pm Thursday, June 11 at St. John’s Anglican Church, 160 Main st,  Wolfville, Nova Scotia, with a reception to follow. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Brain Injury Association of Canada or a charity of your choice. Online condolences can be sent to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com.
