Oldest resident of New Ross, Lavinia Mary "Vene" Meister

passes away at age 102

 

Lavinia Mary "Vene" Meister - 102, of New Ross, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015 in Fisherman's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born on Alton Road, Annapolis County, she was a daughter of the late Thaddeus and Norine (DeAdder) Gaul. Lavinia grew up in Dalhousie, living several years in Crossburn, when the family moved there so her father could work with the Davison Lumber Company. She received her teaching diploma from Summer School, Normal College, Truro, teaching in Lakeview, Harriston and also worked for several years at Edgehill. She was a member of the Charing Cross Garden Club and the New Ross Golden Age Club. She married Harold in 1937 and continued to live in her own home for the remainder of her life. Special thanks to Debbie MacDonald and the home care providers for helping to make this possible. Lavinia was a gracious lady with a keen sense of style. A wonderful cook, she excelled at baking bread and pies. Lavinia was also known to have a great sense of humour, loved to play cards and go shopping. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Brooks (Brian, deceased), Charlestown, Mass, USA; three sons, Roger (Carole), Peter (Linda) and Neil (Marie), all of New Ross; a sister-in-law, Bertha Gaul, North Alton; ten grandchildren, Debbie (Anthony) Cook, New Ross; Glenn (Jennifer) Meister, Nashville, USA; Steven Meister, Yellowknife; Janice (Robbie) Cornelius, New Ross; Stacey Meister, New Ross; Joel Meister, Halifax; Craig Meister, Halifax; Shelley (Jim) Parsons, Halifax; Vern Meister, Kentville; Dana Meister, Kentville; eight great grandchildren, Julie and Olivia Cook, Elizabeth and Kaitlyn Meister, Samantha and Natasha Meister, Kelsey and Savanna Cornelius; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Harold Meister (1977); two sisters, Phyllis (Colin) Lundrigan and Louie (in infancy); five brothers, Curtis (Mabel), Carroll (Muriel), Joe (Louie), Phillip (Phyllis) and Francis. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2015 in the New Ross Baptist Church, Reverend Douglas Porter officiating. A reception will follow in the church vestry. Burial will take place in the New Ross Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the New Ross Baptist Church, the New Ross Fire Department or the charity of your choice.
