Francis Owen "Frank" Shay

1937-2019

Francis Owen "Frank" Shay

Francis Owen "Frank" Shay – it is with profound sadness the family of Francis Owen "Frank" Shay announce his passing on Friday, November 22, 2019 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Windsor on December 13, 1937, he was a son of the late John and Lillian (Boyd) Shay. Frank played hockey for the Bedford Barons and in 1963 was the league’s highest scorer. He made life-long friends in his teammates over the years. He made his career in sales, first with London Life and later with Havill Brothers Mobile Sales in Bedford, where he received several national sales awards. Frank moved his family to the Annapolis Valley where he was again an innovator, developing the Kentville Home Show at the Kentville Arena and most recently devoted his time to working at "the shop", Shay Tire in Berwick. He had a passion for golf and days were often scheduled around a tee time. He was a member of several golf clubs over the years and never let winter get in the way of a round of golf. He and Reta would winter in Florida, accommodating year round golfing. Frank was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years and was proud to have been able to attend the 2019 Remembrance Day ceremonies in Berwick. Frank had a keen interest in his grandchildren’s activities and was happy to have recently attended one of Cameron’s hockey games. He enjoyed his morning coffee with the boys while his furry companion, Sam waited patiently for him to come home. Frank was a proud husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend, his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Reta (Davis); children, Linda (Michael Covert), Calgary; Kelly (Ted Mahar), Prospect; Allan (Angela Carter), Somerset; son-in-law, Rick Mahar, Cambridge; sisters, Diane (Walter General), Sackville; Connie (David Browning), Martock; grandchildren, Weston (Megan Reville), Nina (Steve Matkin), Sarah, Shay-Lynn (Lucas Shelley), Cameron and Allison; great grandchild, Adam; close friends and "extended family members", Mike and Brenda Trinacty and their daughters, Melanie and Jill. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Barb Mahar (2017); brother, Allen; sisters, Barbara (in infancy) and Colleen. Cremation has taken place.  Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, November 25, 2019 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 in Christ Church, Berwick, Reverend Mel Malton officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Berwick Cemetery. A reception will follow in Christ Church Hall.
