1948-2020

Elizabeth Jeanne "Libby" Goucher

Elizabeth Jeanne "Libby" Goucher RN, BN, B.Ed – 71, of Wolfville, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020 at home. Born in Kentville on October 7, 1948, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Cameron "H.C." and Frances Bertha (Young) Lindsay. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Libby loved spending time with her family and was the foundation that her family leaned on whenever difficulties arose. Libby’s education began in the Kentville School system and she graduated from KCA in 1966. Libby then entered the nursing program at the VG and graduated in 1969. Libby went on to also graduate from Dalhousie with her BN degree and from Acadia with her B.Ed.  Throughout her life, Libby was a constant learner and fed her passion for learning through travel and a love of reading as is evident in her massive book collection. In high school, Libby was an avid athlete and participated in most team sports. In addition, Libby was a proud member of the KCA Cheerleaders. Also, Libby was a firm believer that everyone should learn to swim. As a teenager, Libby taught swimming at the Kentville Pool and as an adult, taught many people to swim at the Acadia Pool. Libby was a longtime nurse who was very proud of her profession. Libby nursed or supervised at the VG, Windsor and Eastern Kings Memorial Hospitals. She ended her career as the Executive Director of the Valley Branch of the VON. While with the VON, Libby was proud to have taken a leadership role in the development of a standardized training curriculum for entry level nursing care. Libby gave willingly of her time especially when her sons were in school. She volunteered for all school projects and spent many days and nights on school day trips and camping outings. Recently, Libby served time on the board of the Atlantic Branch of the Canadian Kidney Foundation and has served many years as the Secretary of the Port Williams Hospital Auxiliary. Libby loved to travel and she and Peter travelled extensively in mainland Europe, Egypt, Iceland, the British Isles and the United States. Libby also really enjoyed long daytrips and she and Peter loved exploring the many less used back roads. Libby will be remembered for her leadership, strength and her ability to relate to everyone. Her sharp wit and warm smile were infectious and she will be missed dearly by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Brian "Peter"; sons, Matthew Carruthers, Wolfville and Drew (Colleen) Carruthers, Pointe Claire, Quebec; grandchildren, Cameron and Aria; sister, Penelope "Penny" (Cyril) White, Kentville; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn Lindsay.
